Homeschooling

As you know Julie's school will be closing down at the end of the school year. Scott and I have been researching schools trying to decide where we are going to send her next year. I researched homeschooling once before and then found Village and decided to send her there. Has anyone ever been home schooled? What are some of your thougths on homeschooling? I am not saying that I want to do it the rest of her school years, but would like to try it out next year to see how it works out. Let me know your thoughts.

We homeschooled the boys last year and I hated it. A kid has to be really motivated to do well. I am much happier with them in public this year. I figure if none of the Christians go to school who will be a light in the darkness (school) anyway.

Hey Christine. Thank you for replying. It's not that I want to keep Julie out of school because its not a Christian school. The majority of the reason is that I do not like the school system where we are. We are not at the point where we can buy a house and do not really want to rush to find a house we can move to. So the boys hated it. We havent discussed it with Julie yet, but I think she would like it. Did the boys do work on the computer? There is one home school program that I am looking at that sends out a computer and is completly free. They even pay for a portion of your internet. I havent had a chance to go through it real good, but it sounded really neat.

That is virtual public school. I have heard that is cool. We actually did text book type of thing like the public or Christian schools. The boys thought it was always play time so it was very stressful on me. They learned a lot by some miracle though, haha.

If Julie is pretty motivated she'd do great most likely. I was self motivated and loved and excelled in homeschool.

Goshen has a great school system and has open enrollment.

Ray- I havent looked myself but was told that it is voted one of the five lowest schools in Ohio. I know you and Kait went there so your imput is important. I actually liked Milford, but again we dont want to move until we are ready to buy a house and we just wont be in that position in 6 months.

We talked to Julie about home schooling and if she would want to do it for a year and she was so excited. She said Mom you could be Mrs McKnight the smartest teacher and Dad could be Mr McKnight the coolest teacher. (Mrs McKnight is her teacher this year and sometimes her husband will sub for her)

Her favorite part is that she will get to work on the computer though.

I am against homeschooling under most circumstances. My son tried ECOT (free public - they send you a computer, printer and pay for internet) and although it was a good alternative for him, he wasn't self-motivated so I had to be sitting right there with him the whole time and then it was almost as if I was doing the work for him. Now there are homeschool setups where parents share the teaching and the students travel back n forth between the homes - knew a couple of kids in college who did that. But it was very social and it was a real-type classroom setting with books and all. ECOT is good for students who need to work for some reason or who have a parent who can be their teacher for at least 5 hours a day, but otherwise, I didn't like it. I saw the lessons and quizzes and tests and wasn't impresssed. I wouldn't recommend it. Erin loves CNE and I have had a positive experience with most every aspect. She came from Easter Brown and says CNE is more challenging and less about social sstatus than the other school. Dave would vote for Goshen tho. =)

I LOVE Goshen so far. They work so well with the boys. They are actually a more advanced school than most too. The teachers are amazing (The ones I have dealt with so far)

Thanks Trish- There is so many different homeschooling options but I havent had a chance to view them all. I am not even sure if this will be an option for us because I am a full time working mother and work well over 40 hours a week. I do not feel that home schooling is an option I would choose permantly but would like to try it out for a year to see how it works. My biggest reason is because we are eventually going to move and I dont want her to keep switching schools. That is also one of the biggest reasons I chose Village because it was attached to so many school districts and it went from K to 12. I am praying that it will open back up in a couple years and she can finish out school there. So basically instead of being put into a new school I would like to see about homeschooling her during this time. When Scott and I talked to her about it she was super excitted that we would be her teachers. She loves playing school and stuff and is always reading.

Christine- I remember Robins cousin started out in Blan and had a hard time. He moved to Goshen and his parents said the teachers worked with them a lot more. I am glad your kids enjoy it there.

I am against home schooling as well. Kids need the social interaction. and also, I realize parents like to look up ratings on schools but you get out of it, what you put into it, it doesn't matter which school you attend.

Lisa, you are totally right about getting out of it what you put in it. I have not rolled out Goshen, but again I dont want to send Julie to a new school when we will be moving eventually and I am not sure where. As far as social interaction she will still be able to get that from Church friends, her cousins, friends she has made, almost all of my friends have children her age, ect. The two schools I looked at for home schooling still get to go on field trips and do all the the things a student in an actual would do, they would just be doing it from home.

I appreciate all the imput from everyone!!
